What Makes Us Different?
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Airman's Odyssey
You didn't come here for philosophy, but if there's one statement that sums up our approach to our products this is it.
I never understood why bicycle chain lubricants needed perfumes or colours. I generally don't spend a lot of time smelling my chain.
I guess lubricant manufacturers thought something that looks or smells nice must be doing good. I knew this wasn't the case because chain lubrication isn't about appearances, it's about performance.
A chain lubricant is composed of two things: the lubricant and the carrier. The lubricant is the part that does the work. The carrier is the thing that... well... carries the lubricant to the places that need it, as they need it.
The gunky build-up you see on chains and sprockets is the carrier congealing over time as it attracts dirt and dust.
The most widely used lubricant in the cycling industry is PTFE - also known as Teflon. While I know that PTFE is a very good - and cheap - lubricant, it's also a "forever chemical" and I have no interest in being part of that.
The best metal-to-metal lubricant known to science is Tungsten Disulfide - or WS2. This is closely followed by Molybdenum Disulfide - or MoS2. We use both of these in our lubricants. Not only are they the best things out there, they are naturally occurring.
So, what makes us different? Well I guess that's down to how much time we spend obsessing over the exact amount of lubricant to carrier ratio. Or how many times we ask "is this absolutely necessary and will it leave an impact on the planet?" in every part of our business, from product, to packaging, and everything in between.
